Holiday Blogging: The Girl Who Wasn't There

I am currently reading a book called ‘The Girl Who Wasn’t There’ by Karen McCombie. It is about a girl named Maisie who starts a new school and starts to see a ghost roaming around the school with her friend Kat. So they decide to explore a bit more, and find out who this ghost was. So far this book has been really really interesting for me, because it involves ghosts and mystery. 2 important things that interest me a lot.

My Book Response: The Tooth

Today we listened to a book called ‘The Tooth.’ It was about a little girl named Marisa that gave up her tooth to a homeless man. It was written by Avi Slodovnick and illustrated by Manon Gauthier.

I think that this was a very thoughtful, but sad text. I say that this is thoughtful because it begins with a simple trip to the dentist and ends with a girl giving everything that she has to a homeless man. Even though the tooth doesn’t bring any money. It’s the fact that this little girl actually sacrificed her tooth. Which she thought would bring money to a man that she doesn’t even know!

I also say that it is sad because in the book it also talks about how the people in the street didn’t even acknowledge the man. It just proves how some people in the world just don’t care about other people that are suffering.

Reading: Monitor My Reading - Week 6

Text: Mr Archibald

1. QUESTION: I wonder? What if? Why? How? -

Answer: Why Edward thought that going to war is cool?

I wonder what Edward is going to say to his father?

How did Mr Archibald know that something was on Edward’s mind?

What if Edward’s father did go to war?

2. VISUALIZE: Images I see... The scene I can picture the clearest is... -

Answer: The scene that I can picture is Mr Archibald telling Edward to sit down. Then Mr Archibald asking him what’s wrong. Edward just exploding about how he feels about his father and he hates him and thinks that he is a coward. But then I see Mr Archibald completely cool and calm and telling him that his father is not a coward and asking how he can hate his own father.

3. INFER: I think the author wants me to know... The author didn't actually say.... but I think... Things seem... -

Answer: I think that the authors wants me to know that going to war and fighting is not the most courageous thing to do. This is because going to war seems cool and seems like a courageous thing to do, but saying no to something that makes you look like a coward, but you know that it is the right thing to do, is something that takes guts and courage.

4. CONNECT: This part reminds me of... My life... The world... Other texts... -

Answer: When Edward thinks that going to war is something cool is reminds me of my cousin Diego. This is because he has also thinks that getting into fights and going to war or playing with guns is the coolest thing to do.

5. FEEL: Which parts did you have an emotional connection to? How did YOU feel when you read this part? -

Answer: I don’t emotionally connect to this book. But when Mr Archibald told Edward about what his father is doing it just made me realise. That sometimes saying no takes more guts.

6. EVALUATE: Was this good? Why? Why not? What would make it better? -

Answer: I think that this book is great. This is because it really made me think different about war. I also liked it because it shows us that we have to sometimes think about it from our parents point of view.

I wonder what happened at the end?

I wonder if Isaac did really lie for Tamasi?

2. VISUALIZE: Images I see... The scene I can picture the clearest is... -

Answer: On the first page the scene that I picture in my head is the school hall. The students and teachers sitting in the audience. Then Tamasi and Isaac stand up and join the rest of the school captains. Then everybody starts clapping.

3. INFER: I think the author wants me to know... The author didn't actually say.... but I think... Things seem... -

Answer: I think that the author wants me to know that we should always do the right thing. Even though Tamasi is Isaac’s friend he still should’ve told Miss Latu straight away.

4. CONNECT: This part reminds me of... My life... The world... Other texts... -

Answer: In the beginning when they announce the school captains. It reminds me of when Joshua, Patrick, Rosrine and I first got announced school leaders in our Opening Mass.

5. FEEL: Which parts did you have an emotional connection to? How did YOU feel when you read this part? -

Answer: The part that I connected to was when Tamasi asked Isaac to lie for him.

6. EVALUATE: Was this good? Why? Why not? What would make it better?  

Answer: I think that this book was quite good. This book was good for me because it had a moral to the story. I also think that the structure was good and also the vocabulary.

Looking at the Poster: I am David

This illustration is a picture from the book I am David. It is a picture of David looking at the poster about the circus and wishing that he could be able to go to the circus. But sadly he can not, for he needs to avoid people and big crowds.

In my previous post I enxplained about a book that we have been reading a book named I am David. So for our reading activity we had to illustrate a scene from the book. My scene was when David stole the bucket of Food from some Shepherds while they were sleeping.

In Room 7 we have been reading different books. And at the moment we are reading a book named I am David it is about a twelve year-old boy named David who escapes prison camp. Then goes on an amazing adventures through Europe, to get to his destination. So far I have found this book very interesting I can't wait to read the rest. And I hope that you will feel the same.

Hokule'a 40th Anniversary!

Today for expressive writing I am going to talk about Hokule'a 40th Anniversary.

Hokule’a is not a plane or a car, it is a canoe. Hokule’a actually means ‘Star of Gladness’ in Hawaiian. It was taken off from the shores of Kāne‘ohe Bay on O‘ahu. It was built to help bring people momentum to the Hawaii.

Then between the years of 1975 - 2000. Hokule’a sailed 6 huge voyages. Hokule’a travelled to the Polynesian Triangle, to New Zealand and to Rapa Nui.

Hokule’a brought the language of Hawaii, the culture of Hawaiian, Dancing, Chanting and Singing. So on the 8th of March Hokule’a could finally celebrate 40 great years.

Now to celebrate the 40 years there are going to be festivals. To celebrate the wonderfulness and happiness that Hokule’a has brought!

04.03.2015 The Features of a Story

The features in a story is the who, what, when, where, why and how.

WHO was in the story? - Jake and his Cousin.

WHAT happened in the story? - Jake and his cousin was going to a river, but then a truck falls into the water and drowns. But then Jake and his cousin save the driver and mend their relationship together.

WHEN did this happen? - This event happened during the Summer Holidays.

WHERE did this take place? - This accident took place at a river.

HOW did they feel when the event happened? - They felt like panicking when the truck drowned in the water.

WHY did the truck drown in the water? - It drowned because the truck was crossing a very unsteady bridge. So then the bridge broke apart when the truck crossed it.
